BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After moving into the ABCA top 25, the #23 ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team tallied their ninth consecutive win by defeating Belhaven in preparation for the SAA tournament.
After a leadoff walk by
Eli Steadman,
Andrew Dutton roped a ball to right center and made his way all the way to third for an RBI. Later in the inning,
Jakob Zito singled opposite field to double the BSC lead in the bottom of the first.
Belhaven got a run back in the top of the second on an RBI single before both teams went silent in the third and fourth innings. In the top of the fifth, the Blazers tied the game with a sac fly despite BSC producing a double play. The Panthers then failed to respond in the bottom of the inning which set up an exciting finish down the stretch.
In the top of the sixth, Belhaven got tricky on the bases and took the lead after a double steal call with two outs. However, the lead did not last long as
Ty Truett put down an excellent bunt in the bottom of the inning to score
Charlie Banks.
Forrest Lietz then came in to pinch hit in the next at-bat and gave the Panthers the lead on an RBI single to right field.
The Blazers did not respond in the seventh but would tie the game at four in the top of the eighth. With two outs and a runner on third, Belhaven put the ball in play and reached on BSC's fifth error of the night to tie the game for the third time.
In the bottom of the inning,
Mitch Austin made his first plate appearance of the game and gave the Panthers the lead on a sac fly after fouling a ball off his hand previously.
Andrew Dutton was then walked with the bases loaded to give the Panthers a two-run cushion with three outs to go.
Freshman Jacob Field came in relief for BSC in the eighth and brought the heat. After the team regained the lead in the ninth, Fields went on to allow no runs in the ninth to record his first collegiate win and give the Panthers their ninth straight heading into the conference tournament.
