LEXINGTON, Ky. - The #3 seeded Birmingham-Southern baseball team came to play with a dominant win over #2 seed and host Transylvania on Friday night.
Jackson Webster led the way with two grand slams in a nine RBI night.
The Panthers got off to the start they were looking for with a five-run top of the first.
Ian Hancock singled to score the first run followed by
Jakob Zito getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to double the lead.
Shane Nelson followed Zito with a bases-clearing double to give BSC an early 5-0 lead. Transy hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to cut into the lead, but the Panthers led by four after one inning.
Charlie Banks stretched the lead back to five in the top of the third inning, but the Pioneers answered with an RBI double to put the lead back to four.
In the fifth,
Andrew Dutton singled to score
Ty Truett, but the bases were still loaded.
Jackson Webster then came up to the plate and crushed his first grand slam of the evening to left field to give the Panthers a commanding 11-2 lead.
'Southern continued their hot hitting with three more runs in the sixth to take a 14-2 lead heading into the seventh.
Shane Nelson continued his excellent day at the plate with his second RBI extra base hit this time with a triple.
Forrest Lietz then brought Nelson home on a pinch-hit double to stretch the lead to 16-2. After his grand slam in the fifth, Webster had another in store. He smoked the first pitch he saw to left field for his second of the game to give the Panthers 21 runs in the regional opener.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Pioneers hit their second homer of the night but still trailed 21-3 with only one inning to go. Transy tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the ninth on a double and a single, but it was not enough as the Panthers took the opening game of the Lexington Regional, 21-7.
