LEXINGTON, Ky. - After a huge night at the plate on Friday, the #3 seed Birmingham-Southern baseball team hit three more home runs to defeat #1 seed Spalding and advance to the Lexington Regional Championship.
Spalding put runners on base in the top of the first, but BSC's
Josh Leerssen got out of the inning with only one run allowed. However, the lead did not last long as
Eli Steadman led off the bottom of the first for the Panthers with a solo shot to tie the game.
The Eagles regained the lead in the top of the second inning on an rbi single up the middle while 'Southern couldn't answer immediately.
However, in the bottom of the third,
Andrew Dutton roped the ball down the right field line over the wall to give the Panthers their first lead of the afternoon, 3-2.
Josh Leerssen continued to deal for the Panthers and held the Eagles scoreless for the remainder of his outing through seven innings. In the bottom of the sixth, senior
Jakob Zito hit a huge solo homer to double BSC's lead and put them up 4-2 with three innings to play.
Hansen McCown came on in relief of Leerssen and recorded a two-inning save to close out Spalding. The team preserved their 4-2 lead and put themselves a win away from a Regional Championship and a spot in the Super Regionals.
