EASTLAKE, OH. - The Birmingham-Southern baseball team came up short against #8 Salve Regina in game one of the Division III College World Series.
In game one of the Division III College World Series, the Panthers had two men on base and seemed to be building momentum early. However, the Panthers could not bring a run across as both teams failed to score in the first.
With two outs and a 1-2 count in the bottom of the second, the Seahawks scored the game's first runs with a three-run homer to left field.
BSC couldn't get the bats going in the top of the third as Salve Regina added a fourth on a sac fly in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the fourth,
Charlie Banks recorded 'Southern's first hit since the first inning, but a double play ultimately ended the Panthers' hopes of a rally. Salve Regina added a fifth in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice which left the Panthers with a tougher mountain to climb.
In the fifth, the Seahawks added on with a two-run homer down the left field line to make the score 7-0. However, BSC got on the board in the top of the succeeding inning on a
Charlie Banks RBI single up the middle.
Freshman
Dominick Scalese came in to pitch in the sixth and held the Seahawks scoreless for the first time since the opening inning. The Panthers then got hot and made it a close contest in the top of the seventh.
Eli Steadman brought home
Ty Truett for BSC's second run of the game before
Andrew Dutton singled through the right side to bring home
Forrest Lietz and
Shane Nelson. Dutton advanced to second on a fielding error which allowed him to reach home after
Ian Hancock singled through the left side. After trailing by as many as seven runs, the Panthers trailed by only two with two and a half innings left to play.
BSC loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with two outs but couldn't quite sneak the ball up the middle to bring more runs home. In the ninth,
Jackson Webster and
Ian Hancock both reached base, but 'Southern couldn't bring them home and ultimately fell 7-5 in game one.
