Slow start spells doom for BSC in loss at Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas  – Birmingham-Southern (2-4) couldn't overcome a slow start as host Austin College (4-3) claimed a 43-17 victory at Apple Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  

Austin College scored the first 29 points of the game to take a 29-0 lead before the Panthers put up their first points late in the second quarter.  

Travis Bromley scored two touchdowns combined with a safety to give the Kangaroos a 16-0 lead after the first quarter.  Bromley scored on runs of 16 and five yards with a safety by Nick Zitaglio sandwiched between.

Kent Bell rushed in from 30-yards out with 11:53 to go in the second and Ryan Cowley rambled 80-yards to give AC a 29-0 lead with 9:26 to go in the first half.

Jonah Fryfogle gave the Panthers their first points of the day, nailing a 41-yard field goal to make the score 29-3 with 1:27 left in the second quarter.

Austin College extended the lead to 36-3 on its first possession of the second half on a Ross Hasten 32-yard run with 9:29..

BSC would answer on its next two possessions on two TD passes by Joe Thigpen to cut the Kangaroos lead to 36-17.  Anthony Mostella capped a two-play, 44-yard drive on a 40-yard pass from Joe Thigpen cutting the AC lead to 36-10 at the end of the third quarter. Thigpen hit Donte Rome on a fourth and goal from the AC 5 with 9:04 left in the fourth quarter.

The Kangaroos added a late touchdown with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter to equal its final margin of victory.

Birmingham-Southern returns home for the first of two home games on Saturday when Centre College visits for a 12 p.m. kickoff at Homewood Field in Homewood, Ala.
