HOMEWOOD, Ala. – A rally from 24-7 deficit came up short for Birmingham-Southern (2-5) as Centre College (4-3) held off the Panthers for a 24-17 victory before a crowd of 1,280 at Waldrop Stadium on Saturday.
BSC scored 10 fourth quarter points to trim the Centre lead to 24-17. Jonah Fryfogle connected on a 20-yard field goal to cut the lead to 20-10 with 14:48 to go and Alex Streetman caught a 22-yard pass from Joe Thigpen with 3:46 left in the fourth. Centre College took the ensuing kickoff and gained a pair of first downs to run out the clock.
The Panthers struck first driving 82 yards in 10 plays to take a 7-0 lead. Walter Arrington capped the drive on a two-yard run with 8:12 left in the first quarter.
Centre would score the next 24 points to build a 24-7 lead. Ned McCaster got the Colonels on the board, scoring on a two-yard run with 1:24 remaining in the first to tie the game.
Quarterback Jarrod Williams tossed two second quarter touchdowns to give Centre a 21-7 lead at intermission. Tyler Hinkel caught a three-yard pass from Williams with 9:21 left and Josh Ware scrambled 57 yards for a touchdown on a screen pass with 4:56 to go in the half.
The Colonels added to the lead late in the third quarter on a 19-play, 89-yard drive. Jason Chadwich capped the drive with a 20-yard field to give CC a 24-7 lead with 1:07 to go in the quarter.
BSC had 395 yard of offense on the day. Thigpen completed 25-of-45 passes for 328 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 52 yards on 13 carries. Tony Myers had seven receptions for 121 yards while Streetman, Arrington and Anthony Mostella caught five passes apiece.
Birmingham-Southern remains at home on Saturday at Regions Park against Colorado College at 12 p.m.
