HOOVER, Ala. – Spud Dick tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass with :44 left in the contest to lead DePauw University (4-1) to a 28-24 win over Birmingham-Southern (3-2) at Regions Park on Saturday.
Trailing 21-17, Matt Laird recovered Curtis Moore fumble to set BSC up at the DePauw-40 with 2:59 to play. Three plays later, Joe Thigpen rushed in from 30 yards out on a quarterback draw to give BSC its first lead of the afternoon 24-21 with 2:05 to go.
The Tigers took an early 14-0 lead on a pair of Moore touchdown rushes in the first quarter. Moore, who rushed 27 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns, set up the first score with a 75-yard run and then plunged in from two yards out to give DU a 7-0 lead with 9:45 left in the first quarter. Moore would finish off a 12-play, 86-yard drive on a nine-yard run with :20 left in the first quarter.
BSC cut the deficit in half late in the second quarter. David Moody intercepted a Dick pass at the 2:51 mark to set up the touchdown. Two plays later, Thigpen tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Alex Streetman with 2:12 left in the second quarter.
Justin Dunn intercepted another Dick pass and returned it 26 yards to the DePauw 46 to set up BSC's final score of the first half. Jonah Fryfogle kicked a 34-yard field goal with :21 left to cut the DU lead to 14-10 at the half.
The Tigers scored on their first possession of the second half to take a 21-10 lead. Jeff Bonner hauled in a Dick pass to cap a three-play, 46-yard drive with a 11:49 to go.
BSC drove 81-yards in 13 plays to answer DePauw's drive. Thigpen scored on a one-yard run to trim the DU lead 21-17 with 7:02 to play in the third and set the stage for the fourth quarter fireworks.
The Panthers finished with 353 yards of offense on the day – 230 passing and 123 rushing. Thigpen completed 18-of-33 passes with one touchdown and rushed for 33 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns.
Birmingham-Southern travels to Austin College next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Sherman Texas.
