Final Statistics
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Trinity University (4-0) scored 30 first half points en route to a 44-14 victory over Birmingham-Southern (2-2) here Saturday afternoon at E.M. Stevens Stadium.
BSC's Conrad Blunck stopped Chris Baer for a loss on third and two to help stall Trinity's opening offensive drive. Peter Licalzi kicked a 30-yard field goal to give TU a 3-0 lead with 9:59 left in the first quarter. Licalzi added a 40-yard field goal with 4:17 left in the first quarter to extend the Tigers' lead to 6-0.
Trinity scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 20-0 lead. Baer scored a two-yard rushing touchdown on the second play of the quarter to cap a seven-play, 38-yard drive following a BSC fumble. Blake Barmore hit Riley Curry for a four-yard touchdown pass to finish a seven-play, 61-yard drive with 8:33 left in the half..
The Panthers cracked the scoreboard for the first time on the afternoon when Joe Thigpen completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Tay Walker with 3:42 left in the second quarter. Thigpen was 4-for-4 for 86 yards on the drive.
The Tigers answered on its next two possessions. Greg Bielski took a handoff and scampered 73-yards on the first play of TU's ensuing series and Licalzi chipped in a 21-yard field to for a 30-7 lead at intermission.
Trinity added a six-yard touchdown run by Baer with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter and a one-yard run by reserve quarter Bryant Wilson for a 44-7 lead with 10:56 to go in the fourth.
BSC's second score of the afternoon set a new school record. Walter Arrington caught a pass from Thigpen and after breaking a couple of tackles, rambled for an 80-yard touchdown to trim the TU lead to 44-14 with 9:51 left in the contest. The play set a new record for the longest pass play in school history, breaking the old mark set on a Thigpen to Myers 74-yard TD pass against Mississippi College back on Sept. 6.
Thigpen finished the day completing 13-of-26 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Arrington caught six passes for 124 yards and a touchdown while Tony Myers and Anthony Mostella had two receptions.
Birmingham-Southern hosts DePauw University at Regions Park for Homecoming 2007 at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
