Women's Soccer falls to Maryville on the road, 2-1

MARYVILLE, Tenn. –
Despite an early goal from junior #Sara Menton#, the Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team lost to Maryville, Monday, 2-1 in overtime in Maryville, Tenn. The Panthers fall to 2-1 on the young season.

Menton scored in the sixth minute, and held the 1-0 lead until the 63rd minute when a goal from Ashley Howarth, assisted by Jessica Petersen, tied things up. The duo combined for another goal in the 11th minute of overtime to give Maryville the 2-1 win.

Freshman goalkeeper #Richelle Byrd# played her third full game, making eight saves. Freshman #Hillary Dreyfus# led the team with three of its 12 shots.

"We played two very solid games this weekend, and could have won both," Head Coach Benji Walton said. "To split against two great teams makes for a good opening weekend. Richelle Byrd had an amazing game today. Hopefully we can get healthy soon and return to full strength before our next contest."

The Panthers are off until Sept. 17 when they travel to Atlanta to take on Emory in a 7 p.m. ET kickoff.
