Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn.—Led by freshman Jeneva Salter with a new single-match record 32 kills, the Birmingham-Southern volleyball team defeated Sewanee in five sets Saturday afternoon in Juhan Gymnasium in Sewanee, Tenn.
The Panthers moved to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the Southern Athletic Association; the Tigers fell to 9-7 overall and 2-4 in the SAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BSC won by the scores of 25-27, 26-24, 25-10, 23-25, 15-13.
- After falling behind 10-6 in the first set, BSC rallied with an 11-2 run to pull ahead 17-12. Sewanee used several small runs, however, to catch back up and stay neck-and-neck with the Panthers, before pulling ahead at the end for the win.
- The second set was more of the same, with BSC coming out on the winning side to even the match at 1-1.
- BSC dominated the third set, scoring the final six points of the game after leading 19-10 to win by 15.
- Set three was back-and-forth the entire way, with neither team leading by three before the Tigers gutted it out to win by two.
- Sewanee led for much of the deciding set, pulling out to an 11-8 lead before the Panthers rattled off six straight points to pull ahead 14-11 and then won 15-12 on a Salter kill.
NOTABLE
- Salter's single-match record of 32 kills breaks the previous record of 28, held by Maja Radakovic, who played for BSC in 1999 during the Division I era.
- Other Panthers also had outstanding performances, with senior setter Katie McCormack breaking the 2,000-assist mark of her career with 62 in today's match.
- Senior libero Lauren Bedford had 32 digs.
- Freshman Melaina Hissam recorded 14 digs, followed by sophomore Rylee Segrest with 12 and freshman Marjorie Ward with 11.
- Senior Mollie Peavy led with three blocks.
