ATLANTA, Ga.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team traveled to Atlanta on Tuesday, opening the season against No. 2 Emory. The Panthers lost to the Eagles, 3-0, in the Woodruff P.E. Center in the season opener for both squads.

CLOSE SECOND SET

• After falling 25-14 in the first set, the Panthers kept things interesting in set two, fighting to a 22-19 lead down the stretch and then pulling ahead 23-21. The lead would not stand, however, as Emory proceeded to score four straight points to win 25-21. The Eagles went on to win the third set by the same score as the first.

SALTER LEADS OFFENSIVE EFFORT

• Freshman Jeneva Salter made an impact in her first collegiate match, recording a team-high 11 kills.

FAMILIAR FACES

• Other match leaders were senior setter Katie McCormack with 28 assists, and senior libero Lauren Bedford with 15 digs. Junior Laura Van Peursem also led at the net with three blocks.

HITTING STRUGGLES

• Emory out-hit BSC in all three sets, with a .270 match percentage compared to the Panthers' .083.

THE SERIES

• Emory moves to 8-4 all-time against BSC dating back to 1999, winning the last six matches. The Eagles also extended their home winning streak to 30 matches with tonight's victory.

UP NEXT

• BSC travels to Maryville, Tenn., this weekend for the Maryville College Invitational, facing Washington and Lee and Covenant on Friday, and Lynchburg and Maryville on Saturday.
