Box Score 2 MEMPHIS, Tenn.—A day after falling to Hendrix, 3-0, the Birmingham-Southern volleyball team rebounded with an exciting five-set victory over Rhodes, Sunday afternoon in Memphis, Tenn.
The Panthers moved to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the Southern Athletic Association.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BSC lost to Hendrix by the scores of 25-20, 25-15, 25-19.
- With the exception of a 2-1 lead early in the second set, and a 4-3 lead early in the third, the Panthers trailed the Warriors for almost the entire match.
- Against Rhodes, BSC won the first two sets, 25-18, 25-18, before the Lynx rallied to win sets three and four, 25-18, 25-20; the Panthers claimed the victory with a 15-12 win in the deciding set.
- BSC led 23-9 in the first set before Rhodes stormed back to cut it to 24-18, but the winning kill was delivered by freshman Jeneva Salter.
- The Panthers found themselves in a similar situation in the second set, leading 23-13 before the Lynx rattled off a 5-1 run to cut it to 24-18; this time the winning point was from senior Mollie Peavy.
- Rhodes fought back to win the third and fourth sets, hitting .406 and .351 respectively.
- BSC opened the fifth set by going up 5-1, but the Lynx quickly tied things up.
- The Panthers pulled back ahead and would lead the rest of the way, although Rhodes cut it to 13-12 before a Lynx service error and then a service ace by freshman Marjorie Ward won the match for BSC.
NOTABLE
- The loss to Hendrix snapped a 10-match winning streak.
- Salter led BSC with eight kills against Hendrix, but had a negative attack percentage for the first time of the season (-.030).
- Senior setter Katie McCormack also posted her lowest assist total of the year (19).
- As a team the Panthers posted their lowest kill total (23) and attack percentage (.063) of the season against Hendrix.
- Senior libero Lauren Bedford led with 14 digs, followed by Ward with 11, in the Hendrix match.
- Against Rhodes, Salter led with 15 kills, followed by Peavy with 11 and junior Caroline Hyde with 10.
- McCormack recorded her fourth double-double of the year against Rhodes with 43 assists and 16 digs.
- Bedford had her first 20-plus dig match of the year with 21 against the Lynx.
- Ward and freshman Melaina Hissam were also in double digit digs against Rhodes, with 17 and 12 respectively.
