Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. – Two late touchdowns upended the Birmingham-Southern College football team Saturday as the Panthers fell 38-34 to the University of Chicago on the road. BSC (1-4, 1-2) led for most of the contest before the late rally.
Jamal Watkins (Hampton, Ga./Dodge City CC) earned a game-high 115 receiving yards on eight catches with two touchdowns. His game-long 56-yard catch from Kerrigan Pennington (Wagerville, Ala./Washington County HS) was the Panthers second touchdown of the game, putting BSC up 17-7 in the second quarter.
Chicago would score two touchdowns before the end of the first half, taking the 21-17 lead with seven seconds on the clock.
Daniel Lopera (Kennesaw, Ga./Mount Paran Christian School) grabbed a 34-yard pass from Pennington to open scoring in the second half and give the Panthers the lead back, 24-21. After Chicago tied the game on a field goal, the Panthers went ahead again on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Pennington to Watkins.
Ryder Andrews (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) hit a 39-yard field goal with 6:27 remaining in the game to put BSC up 34-24. Andrews would finish with 10 points.
But Chicago responded with a touchdown near the four-minute mark and the eventual game winner with 1:04 left to play.
Ivan Villageois (Montgomery, Ala./Saint James HS) led the Panthers defense with seven total tackles, six solo.
Birmingham-Southern returns home for their next matchup. They take on Hendrix College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 in Krulak Stadium.
