Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern College football team could not recover from a slow start Saturday night against Huntingdon College for the Wesley Cup. The Panthers fell 49-28 on the road. BSC still leads the Wesley Cup series 4-3 all-time.
Kerrigan Pennington (Wagarville, Ala/Washington County HS) had a hand in all four Panther touchdowns. He led the team in rushing and passing, picking up a game-high 171 yards on the ground. This marked his second consecutive 100+ yard rushing game.
Pennington ran in the Panthers first touchdown. His 30-yard run along with the extra point from Ryder Andrews (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. But Huntingdon then scored four straight touchdowns.
BSC answered with just 26 seconds left before the break on a 3-yard run by Pennington.
After Huntingdon put up another touchdown, Jamal Watkins (Hampton, Ga./Dodge City CC) crossed into the endzone for the first time this season on a 48-yard pass from Pennington with 7:01 left in the third quarter. Pennington would then find Daniel Lopera (Kennesaw, Ga./Mount Paran Christian School) with 16 seconds left in the third for a 73-yard touchdown pass.
But the Hawks (2-0) tacked on another touchdown in the fourth to secure the win and the Wesley Cup.
Birmingham-Southern remains on the road. The Panthers open Southern Athletic Association play at Sewanee on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
