Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team dropped its first game of the 2018-19 campaign on Friday night, falling to the Huntingdon College Hawks 94-90 at home.
After leading by three points, 47-44, at halftime, Birmingham-Southern (2-1) outscored 50-43 in the final 20 minutes to lose its first contest three games into the season.
The Panthers and Hawks swapped leads 10 times in the game with Huntingdon (1-2) taking the lead for the final time after a Kyante Pines free throw with 1:31 to play.
Sophomore forward Ben Spence (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) led the Panthers with 28 points, a career high. Spence was 9-for-11 from the field, including 5-for-6 from beyond the arch, and recorded a game-high eight rebounds.
Three other Panthers scored in double digits with freshman Troy Stephens (Atlanta, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) scoring 14 points and Zachary Allison (Pelham, Ala./Wallace State CC) and Cole DenBesten (Orlando, Fla./Berry College) scoring 10 points each.
As a team, BSC shot 50.8 percent from the field, 48.6 percent from three and 57.9 percent from the free throw line.
Birmingham-Southern will be back at Bill Battle Coliseum for its next game against Pensacola Christian on Monday, November 19. Tipoff for the game against the Eagles is scheduled for 7 p.m.
