Baseball Fends Off Oglethorpe 5-3

ATLANTA – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team survived to beat Oglethorpe 5-3 on the road Friday night, earning a win in the first game of the three-game series against the Stormy Petrels.

Up 5-0 midway through the eighth, BSC allowed three runs in the bottom half of the inning but managed to find the six outs it needed to cut the Oglethorpe comeback off and secure the victory.

Second baseman Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS), returning to his hometown, accounted for most of the Panther offense knocking in three runs. Toner was credited with a sacrifice fly in the first that gave BSC the opening 1-0 lead. Toner then had an RBI single in the third that marked BSC's fourth run of the game. He capped off his night with a solo home run in the sixth, which gave BSC the 5-0 lead.

Junior Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start for the Panthers, throwing six shutout innings. He allowed just three hits in the outing, striking out six batters. Cook was credited with the win to put him at 6-3 on the year.

With the win, the Panthers improve to 19-14 overall and 9-10 in conference play.

Birmingham-Southern and Oglethorpe will wrap up the series on Saturday, April 14 with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
