BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted West Florida, Rhodes and Millsaps in its season-opening dual meet at the Birmingham Crossplex on Saturday afternoon.
In 32 total events, the Panthers won 13 of them. The men's team defeated both Rhodes and Millsaps, 200-73 and 239-18, respectively. On the women's side, the Panthers went 1-2, defeating Millsaps 262.5-8.5 but fell to West Florida and Rhodes.
Three different Panther swimmers won multiple events at the meet: Freshman Charlie Fountain (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview HS), sophomore Chase Bolding (Panama City Beach, Fla./Wyoming) and senior Tristan Sumpter (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge HS). Fountain took first in the 400-yard IM and 1000-yard freestyles, Bolding won the 200-yard fly and 200-yard breaststroke, and Sumpter finished first in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events.
Sophomore diver James Hughes (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom HS) also took first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with scores of 233.18 and 248.93, respectively.
Birmingham-Southern won the men's 200-yard medley relay, as well, tapping the wall in 1:37.45. That relay team consisted of Nico Medina (Hollywood, Fla./American Heritage HS), Connor Schwartz (New Orleans, La./Jesuit HS), Bolding and Sumpter.
Some notable finishes on the women's side included a second-place finish by Mary Katherine Stewart (Daphne, Ala./Daphne HS) in the 200-yard backstroke and third place finishes by Anna Jordan Luth (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington HS) in the 200-yard breaststroke and Mary Miller Goldberg (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) in the 1000-yard freestyle.
Birmingham-Southern will travel to Emory – the defending women's national champion and men's national runner-up – for its next meet on Saturday, Oct. 26.
