Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team returned to its winning ways on Friday night, taking down the Lynx of Rhodes College 71-66.
The win over the Lynx snaps the Panthers' five-game losing streak and improves BSC to 11-11 overall and 5-7 in the Southern Athletic Association.
BSC led for most of the game, jumping out a lead as much as 11 points in the first half. However, with around six minutes to play, the visitors went on a run to make it interesting in the end.
With 5:53 remaining, Rhodes took its first lead, 60-58, since the opening minutes. The Panthers and Lynx battled back-and-forth until consecutive lay-ups by Christian Stewart (Irondale, Ala./Shades Valley HS) and Matt Gonda (Roswell, Ga./Roswell HS) gave BSC a 67-64 lead with 1:51 to play.
Stewart added two more points with to the lead by sinking both his shots from the free throw line, and senior Zachary Allison (Pelham, Ala./Wallace State CC) iced the game with his two made free throws with 14 seconds left to give BSC the final 71-66 lead.
Stewart led the Panthers with 14 points. Gonda and Cole DenBesten (Orlando, Fla./Berry College) each had 10 and 11 points, respectively.
Sophomore Ben Spence (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) led the team with nine rebounds.
Birmingham-Southern returns to Bill Battle Coliseum for its next game against Hendrix on Sunday, Feb. 10 with tipoff slated for 3 p.m.
