Panthers Sweep Competition on Senior Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed against Southern Athletic Association foes Berry and Millsaps on Senior Day at the Birmingham Crossplex on Saturday morning.

The Panthers swept the competition with the BSC men beating Berry 165-120 and Millsaps 228-22 while the women defeated Berry 167-125 and the Majors 256-14. BSC won 17 of the 32 events with the men taking eight and the women winning nine events.

The Panther seniors performed well on Senior Day. Jenna Luth (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington HS) took first in the first individual event of the day, the women's 1000-yard freestyle, with a time of 11:06.31. Meanwhile, Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) took first in two events, the women's 50-yard and 500-yard freestyles.

Tristan Sumpter (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge HS) also had two first-place finishes, taking the men's 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle. Sumpter and Nico Medina (Davie, Fla./American Heritage HS) helped the Panthers win the men's 200-yard medley, and then Ryan Emili (Anchorage, Alaska/Cal Lutheran) joined in to help BSC take second place in the men's 400-yard freestyle relay.

Other notable performers for BSC were Chase Bolding (Panama City Beach, Fla./Wyoming) and Mary Katherine Stewart (Daphne, Ala./Daphne HS), who both won two events each. Sophomore James Hughes (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom HS) grabbed first place in both the men's 1- and 3-meter diving events.

The senior class, recognized before the start of meet, consists of Emili, Erwin, Medina, Sumpter, Luth, Madelynn Kraft (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle HS), Ramsey Shane (Fairhope, Ala./Fairhope HS), Abby Swain (Lawrenceville, Ga./Archer HS) and Eleni Heller (Northville, Mich./Northville HS).

The meet against Berry and Millsaps was BSC's final home meet of the season. The Panthers will travel to the Berry Invite for their next meet on Jan. 24-25.
