Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team was downed at home by the Berry Vikings 77-70 on Friday night.
After defeating Berry on the road last weekend, Birmingham-Southern was unable to repeat the result in Bill Battle Coliseum.
The Panthers never lead in the game, trailing by as much as 11 in the first half before pulling within six points at halftime. BSC kept fighting in the second half, however, and at two different points in the final 20 minutes pulled within three.
A Denman Kane (Houston, Texas/Episcopal HS) three-pointer with 15:16 left cut Berry's lead to 45-42. Then, in the final minute, an and-one lay-up by Bruce Bright (Birmingham, Ala./John Carroll HS) resulted in a three-point play that made it 73-70 in the visitors' favor. But with BSC forced to foul late, the Vikings sank their free throws and the Panthers could not complete the comeback.
Junior forward Christian Stewart (Irondale, Ala./Shades Valley HS) led the Panthers with a 17-point, six-rebound performance in the loss. Kane, whose points all came from beyond the arch, dropped 15 points off the bench, which tied a career high for the sophomore.
Birmingham-Southern drops to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in the Southern Athletic Association after the loss. The Panthers will look to rebound on Sunday, Jan. 26 when face the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels in Bill Battle Coliseum at 3 p.m.
