SAA Championships: Panthers Surge on Day Two

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams both sit in first place after day two of the 2020 Southern Athletic Association Championships on Thursday.

The men maintained their first-place position, increasing their lead to 62 points over second-place Centre College. The women moved from second place on the opening night to a 32-point first place advantage.

The BSC men won two events – the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay – during Thursday night's finals, giving them 343 total points for the championships. Freshman Joe Swing (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville HS) was the SAA champion in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:35.52. Fellow freshman Charlie Fountain (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview HS) came in second place in the same event.

Freshman Garrett Yarbrough (Mobile, Ala./W.P. Davidson HS), senior Ryan Emili (Anchorage, Alaska/Cal Lutheran), sophomore Connor McClain (Elkmont, Ala./Homeschooled), and freshman Sheridan Harder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS) made up the team that won the men's 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:23.94, setting a new program record.

On the women's side, the Panthers won one event, the women's 200-yard IM. Senior Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) set a new SAA open and SAA championship record and also made the NCAA B Cut with her time of 2:02.6 in the race. The time also smashed BSC's former program record of 2:07.11 in the IM.

Sophomore Mary Katherine Stewart (Daphne, Ala./Daphne HS) also had a notable second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.65, while the BSC women's relay team came in third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The SAA Championships continue on Friday, Feb. 14 at the Birmingham Crossplex. Prelims will start at 10 a.m. with the finals session beginning at 6 p.m.
