SAA Championships: Panthers Increase Leads Over Competition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams increased their respective leads over the competition on day three of the Southern Athletic Association Championships on Friday.

The BSC men's lead now stands at 135 points while the women's lead has grown to 108 points after Friday's finals.

The Birmingham-Southern men captured four individual championships and one relay championship to give them 10 wins over the course the week. Sophomore James Hughes (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom HS) opened the finals with a win in the three-meter diving championship, scoring a BSC and SAA record score of 526.55. The Panthers started the evening strong in the 400-yard IMs, as well, as freshman Charlie Fountain (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview HS) finished first with a time of 4:02.98. Driscoll Crabbe (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill HS) placed second in the event with a time of 4:04.46.

The next individual title for the men came in the 100-yard butterfly when sophomore Chase Bolding (Panama City Beach, Fla./Wyoming) captured first with a time of 49.81. Hayden Henderson (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) followed it up with a win in the men's 100-yard breaststroke, coming in with a time of 56.16. Bolding came second in that event with a time of 56.67.

BSC's men capped their night by earning the 400-yard medley relay championship with a new SAA Championship record time of 3:23.12. Henderson, Bolding, Ryan Emili (Anchorage, Alaska/Cal Lutheran), and Sheridan Harder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS) were the four members of the relay team.

On the women's side, the Panthers captured two individual titles and one relay title. Freshman Mary Miller Goldberg (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) got BSC started with a win in the 400-yard IM, finishing first with a time of 4:31.71. Sophomore Anna Jordan Luth (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington HS) placed second in the IM with a time of 4:33.07.

Senior Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) was the women's second title win of the evening, taking the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle. Erwin finished the race with a time of 1:48.25, earning a NCAA B Cut and breaking her own BSC program and SAA Championship record time in the event.

The BSC women capped the night with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Mary Katherine Stewart (Daphne, Ala./Daphne HS), Birch Ely (Birmingham, Ala./Vanderbilt), Goldberg, and Erwin won the event with a time of 3:53.55.

Stewart and Ely also had notable finishes in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke with Stewart placing second in the backstroke and Ely finishing third in the breaststroke.

The SAA Championships conclude on Saturday with prelims beginning at the Birmingham Crossplex at 10 a.m. and the finals following in the evening at 6 p.m.
