BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams dominated at the Southern Athletic Association Championships to win their sixth- and fourth-straight conference titles, respectively, on Saturday night.
It was a rout for the Panthers, who combined to beat the competition by 347 points. The BSC men ended the championships 183 points ahead of second-place Centre, while the women finished 164 points ahead of the Colonels.
Adding to their numerous individual and relay titles captured during the week, the Panther men tallied four more wins on Saturday, the final night of competition. Freshman Joe Swing (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville HS) started night off with a win in the men's 1650-yard freestyle, earning a NCAA B Cut time and setting a new SAA Championships record with a time of 15:50.73. Fellow freshman Charlie Fountain (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview HS) finished second in the event.
Swing's victory was followed by another top finish by sophomore Hayden Henderson (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) in the 200-yard breaststroke. Henderson earned a B Cut time in the event with a 2:04.77 finish.
Sophomore Chase Bolding (Panama City Beach, Fla./Wyoming) joined his BSC teammates atop the podium with his win in the 200-yard butterfly. Bolding swam the event in 1:50.30, good for a B Cut.
To cap off the night for the men, BSC took first in the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing the relay in 3:04.28. Seniors Ryan Emili (Anchorage, Alaska/Cal Lutheran) and Nico Medina (Davie, Fla./American Heritage HS), sophomore Connor McClain (Elkmont, Ala./Homeschooled) and freshman Sheridan Harder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS) competed for the Panthers in the event.
On the women's side, Birmingham-Southern's first win of the night came in the 200-yard backstroke. Sophomore Mary Katherine Stewart (Daphne, Ala./Daphne HS) took first in the event with a time of 2:05.16.
Senior Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) followed up next with her own win in the women's 100-yard freestyle. Erwin broke her own program and SAA record in the event with a time of 50.37, giving her an NCAA B Cut time, as well.
Other notables for the BSC women second-place finishes by freshman Mary Miller Goldberg (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) in the 1650-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly.
More accolades followed for the Panthers in the annual awards ceremony with BSC having the Men's and Women's newcomers of the year, the men's and women's swimmers of the year, and the men's diver of the year.
Erwin and Henderson were named the SAA Women's Swimmer and SAA Men's Swimmer of the Year, respectively. It was the third straight season for Erwin to earn the honor. Goldberg was named the SAA Women's Newcomer of the Year, while Bolding was the conference's Men's Newcomer of the Year. Sophomore James Hughes (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom HS) was named the SAA Men's Diver of the Year for the second consecutive season.
With the title sweep, the Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving programs have combined to win 10 SAA championships in six years.
