Panthers Take Season Opener 6-5 Over Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. – The No. 4 Birmingham-Southern baseball team earned a win in its first game of the season at Piedmont on Friday night.

A three-run first inning propelled the Panthers to the 6-5 win to open the 2020 campaign. Dawson Pfost (Hickory Flat, Ga./Sequoyah HS) opened up the scoring with a two-run single that scored Dawson Pfost (Hickory Flat, Ga./Sequoyah HS) and Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian). Drew Love (Birmingham, Ala./Calhoun CC) was the third run of the inning when he scored on a Piedmont error.

Birmingham-Southern added its remaining three runs with runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings.

Senior Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start for the Panthers, tossing five and a third innings, allowing two earned runs off eight hits and striking out seven. It would be Robbie Lively (Helena, Ala./Southern Union), however, that would earn the win, and Jack Stephens (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville HS) recorded his first save of the year.

BSC will face Emory in its next game, a neutral site game at Piedmont on Saturday, Feb. 8. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
