SAA Championships: Panthers in Sixth Following Day 1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Birmingham-Southern men's track and field scored 14 points Friday to sit in sixth place at the Southern Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Rhodes College. The championship will conclude Saturday, April 24.   

Maurice Sutherland (Meridian, Miss./Northeast HS), Jordan Jones (Powder Springs, Ga./Hiram HS) and William Wideman (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS) placed sixth through eighth in the long jump to combine for six of BSC's points. Sutherland jumped a personal record 6.69 meters. Jones followed at 6.64m and Wideman posted a personal record at 6.60m.

Brennan Wink (Ohatchee, Ala./Wallace State) scored two points for the Panthers in the pole vault (3.19m). Derick Maddox (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Paul Bryant HS) threw a PR 12.13-meter shot put to score two more BSC points.  

Beck Wilkes (Winfield, Ala./Winfield HS) placed fifth and scored in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:10.28.   

Three Panther sprinters ran qualifying times in the 100-meter preliminaries. Ne'Andra Howard (Birmingham, Ala./Talladega College) ran an 11.29, followed by John Jacobs, IV (Albany, Ga./Deerfield-Windsor School) with a 11.33 and Reece Weaver (Fort Payne, Ala./Fort Payne HS) was the final qualifier with a personal record 11.39. 

Andrew Warhurst (Anniston, Ala./Oxford HS) had the fourth-fastest time and personal-best 15.86 in the 100-meter hurdles prelim. Howard (58.14) and Warhurst (58.99) both qualified in the 400-meter hurdles. 

Wideman ran a personal record 49.89 400-meter in the prelims to reach Saturday's finals. Wideman also qualified in the 200-meter (22.92), as did Glen Humphrey (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain HS), who ran a 22.86.
