RESULTS
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Birmingham-Southern College captured three event championships to finish fourth in the 2021 Southern Athletic Association Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships April 24 at Rhodes College.
The Panthers scored 106 points on Saturday to close the two-day event meet with 120 points. Rhodes College was first (178), followed by Centre (177) and Berry (138).
Maurice Sutherland (Meeridian, Miss./Northeast HS) jumped his way into BSC's list of champions with a SAA championship in the triple jump at 13.84 meters. Jordan Jones (Powder Springs, Ga./HIram HS) finished third in the event at 13.49m and William Wideman (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS) was fourth with a personal record 13.29m.
The Panthers were also led by the 4x400 meter relay team, which captured the SAA title in a time of 3:24.38. Wideman,
Reece Weaver (Fort Payne, Ala./Fort Payne HS),
Ne'Andra Howard (Birmingham, Ala./Talladega College) and
Glen Humphrey (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain HS) were part of the championship team.
Luke Ballard (Hoover, Ala./Hoover HS) captured the SAA title in the javelin, with a 57.54-meter throw, beating teammate
CJ LeCroy (Isabella, Ala./Isabella HS), who finished second at 55.63m.
Howard also scored 14 points in two personal records, finishing runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles (57.57) and was third in the 100-meter dash (11.14).
Andrew Warhurst (Anniston, Ala./Oxford HS) was sixth (59.64) in the 400 hurdles and third in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal record time 15.63.
Reece Weaver and
John Jacobs, IV (Albany, Ga./Deerfield-Windsor School) also scored in the 100-meter dash, with Weaver finishing fourth with a 11.30 PR and Jacobs was sixth (11.35).
BSC placed second in the 4x100 with a time of 42.82. Humphrey, Weaver, Sutherland and Howard made up the relay team to score eight points.
Griffin Riner (Trussville, Ala./Hewitt-Trussville HS) placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.10. Teammates
Beck Wilkes (Winfield, Ala./Winfield HS) and
Carl Albright (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) also competed in the event, finishing ninth (2:05.29) and 19th (2:31.52), respectively. Riner just missed a Top 8 finish in the high jump, finishing ninth (1.68m).
Wideman also captured a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.53) with six points, and scored two points in the 400-meter dash, finishing seventh (50.25). Humphrey also scored in the 200, finishing fifth in 22.63.
Derrick Maddox (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Paul Bryant HS), who finished seventh in the shot put on Friday, also finished seventh in the discus throw with a 35.85-meter throw.
Jacob Kennedy (Pinson, Ala./Mortimer Jordan HS) was ninth in the hammer throw, missing eighth place by 0.15m.
