INDIANAPOLIS - Two Birmingham-Southern men's track and field student-athletes have been selected to compete in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, May 27-29, at Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Senior
Luke Ballard (Hoover, Ala./Hoover HS) is the No. 1 seed in the men's javelin competition with a seed mark of 66.67 meters, the BSC school record set April 9 at the Berry Field Day Invitational. Sophomore
Maurice Sutherland (Meridian, Miss./Northeast HS) will compete in the triple jump with a seed mark of 14.57 meters from the Liberty Twilight Qualifier on May 5.
The men's javelin prelims and finals are scheduled for 4:45 p.m. ET on Friday, May 28. The triple jump is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, May 29.
A two-time All-American, this is Ballard's third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship. He placed eighth in 2018 and reached the podium with a third-place finish in 2019. The 2020 championship was canceled due to COVID-19 nation-wide shutdowns. Ballard is the the third BSC javelin thrower to qualify and first BSC javelin thrower to qualify three times.
Hank Ballard qualified in 2013 and 2014, and
Aaron Sherrill in 2013.
Sutherland is the 11th BSC men's athlete to qualify for an NCAA Outdoor Championship since 2012. He joins
Jordan Jones (2019) as the only other Panther triple jump qualifier.
