GREENSBORO, N.C. - Birmingham-Southern College wrapped up its trip to the 2021 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Saturday, as
Maurice Sutherland (Meridian, Miss./Northeast HS) finished 10th in the men's triple jump, one spot shy of the event final.
Appearing in his first NCAA Championship, Sutherland opened the event in eighth place with a 14.06-meter jump through the first round of the preliminaries. His second jump of 14.33m moved him up to seventh place before jumping 14.06m on his third attempt.
Three athletes leapt Sutherland on the third jump including national runner-up Tom Kohn, who jumped 14.64m after two scratches to qualify for the finals on his last attempt. Christopher's Clarence Reeders jumped 14.63m to move into seventh and North Central's Kendall Johnson edged past Sutherland with a 14.36m jump to claim the last qualifying position in ninth.
Rowan's Ahmir Johnson won the triple jump with his top mark of the season at 15.11m.
Sutherland's 10th-place finish is the highest by a Birmingham-Southern athlete in the triple jump at an NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Jordan Jones (Powder Springs, Ga./Hiram HS) was 15th in 2019 with a 14.43m jump.
BSC scored two points at the 2021 championship on Friday with
Luke Ballard's (Hoover, Ala./Hoover HS) seventh-place finish in the javelin.
