The Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team opened its 2011 campaign today with a thrilling 13-11 victory against Carthage College at Panther Stadium.

Led by first-year head coach Emily Wetmore, the Panthers went up 2-0 to start the game before giving up three straight goals to fall behind, 3-2, with 21:55 left in the half. BSC responded four straight goals of its own to take back the lead, 6-3, and gave up one more goal before halftime.

BSC came out and scored three straight goals — two from sophomore Chelsea Van Voorhis — to start the second half to go up 9-4 for the largest lead of the game. The Lady Reds proceeded to score three straight after that, cutting it to 9-7, before another Van Voorhis goal made it 10-7 in favor of the Panthers with 12:53 left to play. Carthage rallied after that, scoring three in a row to tie it up 10-10, with eight minutes remaining.

The Panthers responded with goals from senior Ashley Johnson and junior Lyndsay Griffin, but another Carthage goal cut it to 12-11 with 1:35 left. With 15 seconds left, Johnson found the net again to put BSC up 13-11 for the win.

Johnson and Van Voorhis led with four goals apiece, while Griffin added three. Freshmen Hailey Massa and Madeline Golden led with four ground balls apiece. Junior goalkeeper Katie Bates made 11 saves for the Panthers.

For Carthage, Olivia Nino led with five goals and Karissa Secora led with six ground balls. Andrea Renton recorded four saves in goal for the Lady Reds.

Carthage dominated the draw controls, 17-9, but both teams were even with 32 turnovers each.
