Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn.—With a 12-11 win on the road against Sewanee, the Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team has won a share of its first Southern Athletic Association regular season title.
The Panthers moved to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the SAA, while the Tigers fell to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in league play.
BSC ends the regular season tied with Centre and Rhodes at the top of the standings, but will play as the No. 3 seed in the SAA Championship, which begins next weekend. The Panthers will host No. 6 Hendrix on Friday evening, April 22. Game time will be announced this week.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was back-and-forth the whole way, with neither team ever leading by more than four.
- Sewanee achieved its largest lead of the game, 9-5, at the 3:11 mark of the first half, before the Panthers scored three straight to close out the half trailing by just one, 9-8.
- BSC opened the second half with two straight goals for its first lead of the game, 10-9, but the Tigers tied things up with 20:39 remaining.
- The Panthers pulled ahead again at the 18:28 mark, and Sewanee answered again, tying it at 11-11 with 15:38 left to play.
- BSC scored on a free position shot by junior Hannah Hudson at the 12:10 mark, in what would turn out to be the game-winner, as neither team scored again after that.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Chloe Massoni made three big saves in the final 9:38 to help preserve the victory for BSC.
NOTABLE
- Today's win marks BSC's first-ever conference title.
- Senior Amanda Amerson and sophomore Natalie Daniel each scored three goals today, and Amerson also added two assists.
- Hudson and freshman Katie Gleeson also scored twice each, with Hudson also posting two assists.
- Gleeson and freshman Annie Scierka led with four ground balls apiece, and Scierka and Amerson had three caused turnovers each.
- Gleeson also led with three draw control wins.
- Massoni finished with 11 saves in 60 minutes of action.
