Box Score MOUNT BERRY, Ga.—Holding the Panthers to just two hits, No. 9 Emory defeated No. 7 Birmingham-Southern, 3-1, Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Regional hosted by No. 4 Berry in Mount Berry, Ga.
The Panthers fell to 36-9, while the Eagles moved to 41-4. The teams previously met this season, with BSC defeating Emory, then ranked second in the nation, twice in Birmingham.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BSC held Emory scoreless in the first two innings, ending the first on a double play, but the Eagles scored twice in the top of the third, including one run on a BSC error.
- Both teams went three up, three down in the next three innings before Emory went up 3-0 in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Lana Herrmann.
- The Panthers cut it to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases after a walk, a single, and a catcher's interference, and then scoring on a sac-foul out by junior Maddie Ridgway.
- Neither team got any more runners on base after that, sending BSC to the elimination bracket of the four-team regional tournament.
NOTABLE
- Freshmen Abby Spencer and Catherine Coffey recorded BSC's two hits in the game.
- Junior Taylor Harkins (19-4) started and took the loss in the circle, giving up four hits and one earned run with one walk and one strikeout.
- Freshman Haley Crumpton came in for the final 4.2 innings of the game and allowed three hits and one earned run with one walk and five strikeouts.
