Box Score 2 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern softball team improved to 15-8 overall, 7-2 in Southern Athletic Association play after sweeping conference rival Rhodes College in a doubleheader Saturday in their annual Relay for Life games. The Panthers walked off in game one with the 2-1 win and earned the 6-5 game two win in the bottom of the 11th inning. BSC also raised over $500 for cancer research and had two BSC cancer survivors throw out the first pitches.
Haley Crumpton (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson HS) led BSC offensively and defensively. She hit a team-best .571 going 4-for-7 with a home run and earned both wins on the mound. She finished with a 0.53 ERA in 13.1 innings of work. Kolyn Kyser (Springville, Ala./Springville HS) and Kendell Hamm (Adamsville, Ala./Sumitron Christian HS) also had multiple hits on the day. Both of Kyser's hits were for extra bases. Hamm had a double and the walkoff single of game two.
Kyser led off with a triple in the bottom of the seventh in game one. When Abby Spencer (Auburn, Ala./Auburn HS) grounded out to third, Kyser slipped home and under the tag for the game winning run.
In game two, Crumpton sent a ball over the right field wall to tie the game up at 4-all in the bottom of the sixth inning. The defenses battled into extra innings. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th, Hamm drilled a ball up the middle for the second walkoff of the day.
The series concludes tomorrow at BSC Park. First pitch is set for noon.
