BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern softball team pulled out the 2-0 win over Hendrix College Friday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the 2018 Southern Athletic Association tournament. BSC (28-13) will now face No. 5 Berry College at noon ET on Saturday for a chance to play for the title.
Haley Crumpton (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson HS) pitched a complete game shutout. She struck out 10 and walked zero of the 26 batters she faced to improve to 23-5 on the year. Jojo Johnston (Chelsea, Ala./University of Mobile) led the team offensively, hitting two triples, scoring a run, and knocking in the game winner.
The game was tied at zero until the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs on the board, Abby Spencer (Auburn, Ala./Auburn HS) walked on four straight pitches. She scored the first run of the game when Johnston chipped a triple over the right fielders head. A bloop hit to shallow left by Crumpton would score Johnston and give BSC the 2-0 lead. Hendrix got out of the inning on the next batter but the damage was done. The Panthers retired the next six batters to earn the win.
BSC is 3-4 all-time against Berry in the tournament. They lost their last postseason meeting with the Vikings 9-3 in the quarterfinals of 2017.
