Box Score 2 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern softball team took advantage of their spring break with two wins against Maryville in a doubleheader on Wednesday at BSC Softball Park.
Margaret Axelson threw a shutout for the Panthers with only one hit for the Scots in the first game and earning a save in the second game of the doubleheader.
Game one: Birmingham-Southern started off with one run in the bottom of the first with
Morgan McGuire scoring on ground out by
Margaret Axelson. Axelson went on to strikeout six batters in the next three innings, two strikeouts recorded in each. The Panthers added their second run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single from
Alyssa Fowler that scored
Izzy Berkopec. The bottom of the fifth saw two runs on no hits for BSC with an error from the Scots. The first run came from
Piper Lowery as she scored on a fielding error, the second from
Morgan McGuire, making it 4-0 in favor of Birmingham-Southern. Axelson struck out two more batters in the top of the seventh, ending the game with 9 strikeouts recorded and earning the win for the Panthers.

Game two: The second game of the doubleheader was an even fight with Birmingham-Southern coming out victorious as Maryville was unable to catch the lead.
Hailee Bryan started in the circle for the Panthers, going for three innings before
Olivia Trout took over and earned her first win of the season. Once again, BSC took the early lead adding on two runs in the bottom of the first.
Morgan McGuire scored on an error by second base that allowed
Katie Hart to get on base and advance to third. Hart went on to steal home during the next at bat.
Jordyn Green added the third run for the Panthers in the bottom of the second, scoring on another error from the Scots. Maryville added two runs of their own in the top of the third with two RBI singles to make the game 3-2 in favor of BSC. The bottom of the third saw three runs on four hits for Birmingham-Southern with RBI singles from
Emma Jolley and
Lauren Cabiness, and an RBI double from
Leah Wood. The Scots were not done with their fight and added a third run in the top of the fourth, putting them behind by three runs at 6-3. The Panthers were unable to add another run to the score, but the Scots continued on adding two more runs to fall short 6-5 as Birmingham-Southern took the victory.
